Background Information
This Little Light of Mine was written in the early twentieth century, probably around 1920, by Harry Dixon Loes. Mr. Loes was a bible student who studied at Moody Bible Institute. He also had a great musical education studying at the American Conservatory of Music. He also wrote or co-wrote several other gospel songs including All Things in Jesus, Blessed Redeemer, Love Found a Way, and Shine For Jesus Where You Are.
There are several places in the Bible where Jesus teaches his followers to let their light shine including Matthew 5:14-16 and Luke 11:33. Whatever his inspiration, the simple lyrics, and catchy tune caught fire in the Civil Rights Movement of the 50s and 60s and became one of the hallmark songs of peaceful protest.
