Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia;
Christ the Savior, is born!
Christ the Savior, is born!
Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Background
The original lyrics were written in 1816 by Austrian Joseph Mohr. He was only 24 at the time and was on his first assignment as an assistant priest in Mariapfarr, Austria. Mohr loved to play his guitar and in 1818, he asked Franz Gruber, who was the organist and choirmaster at St. Nicholas Church in the nearby village of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, to add a melody and guitar accompaniment to his poem. Gruber was happy to help and together they performed the song for the first time in 1818 at the St. Nicholas Christmas Eve Mass backed by the St. Nicholas choir. It is now a favorite and beloved hymn of the Christian tradition and sung all over the world in many languages.
