Baby Bye Lullaby NEW
by: Lisa Cornish

My grandmother used to sing it to all her grandchildren, I sang it to my children and now to my own granddaughter. Her version was:
Me oh my oh,
baby bye oh,
Me oh my oh baby bye.

Be oh by oh
Baby my oh,
Be oh by Oh baby my.
(Repeat)

I always thought it was of Cajun decent although we had no Cajun in our family. My grandparents were from the Ozark hills. My grandmother was of Dutch decent and there was some Indian heritage from my grandfathers side. This must be a very old lullaby and through the years many have added their own touch to make their own version.

My Granny sang it to me as follows NEW
by: Anonymous

Bye o bye baby
Bye o bye baby
Go to sleep
Dream so sweet
Bye o bye baby
Bye o bye baby

Rocking and patting, slow and soft.
I remember singing it to my baby dolls as a little girl, later to my younger siblings, and babies I would babysit, and eventually to the babies in daycare where I worked.
My grandparents had roots in Appalachia (Northern Alabama) although by the time I was born our family was in Arizona.

How my mother sang it. NEW
by: Anonymous

My mother sang:

Bye oh baby Bye
Bye oh baby Bye
Go to sleep
and shut your little eyes
Bye oh baby Bye
Bye oh baby Bye
(repeat)

It was slow crooning, rhythmic as she rocked you in her arms. We both sang it for my children.
Her ancestors were from Appalachian Kentucky by way of Tidewater Virginia from England. She would be 94 if she was still alive.

By oh Baby NEW
by: Teresa

My mamaw used to rock me and sing " by oh baby go too sleepy, by oh baby, go to sleepy town" then "by oh baby" on repeat between while she rocked me and patted my bottom. To this day when I am stressed, sick, or in pain I hear her in my mind and it makes me feel better. I miss her so much.
I wasn't sure if she made it up or it was passed down in my family. I have been looking for information on it. This is the first place I found anything about this lulliby. I would love to know its true origin. Her parents werw Pennsylvania dutch.

English NEW
by: Anonymous

This is an English tune. My granny sang the Bye Oh Baby part and she also used many old fashioned English terms. I looked it up and found the origin was English also.

For example, a waist is a shirt...a poke is a sack...a receipt is a recipe...she never used the modern terms for those things.

Bye Oh Baby (Haunting, Soulful Lullaby)
by: Dianna Wagoner

Our Family was Cherokee, German, Irish, and some English, but they were settled in the NC and Virginia mountains. But my Nanny (grandma) used to sing this to us when she'd rock us to sleep, and it had a Native American, soulful, almost haunting sounding tune. But the only words she ever sang were:

Bye Oh Baby,
Bye Oh Baby,
Bye Oh Baby Bye,
Bye Oh My Baby
Bye Oh Baby,
Bye Oh Baby Bye
(repeat)

My mother sang this to us and I, in turn, sang it to my babies.
I always thought it was Cherokee in origin by the tune.

He was old in his late 70s when I was born, he sang it just like the post by Jim I'd love to know it orgin. His parents were from overseas and eventually settled in Appalachia, specifically Tazewell VA in the coal camps, he didn't speak English in his childhood.

Bye of baby NEW

My husband and I sang all 4 of our babies to sleep to this.Have no idea where it came from. But it went: By oh baby go to sleepy town. By oh baby go to sleepy town. Momma loves you go to sleepy town. Momma loves you go to sleepy town.
Then you would sing it over and over again each time adding a different person who loves you. Daddy loves you go to sleepy town. We sang all of the grand parents in it and all the siblings, aunts, uncles. Our 1st born would not go to sleep until we sang the pastors name, loves you go to sleepy town..... Precious memories

bye oh bye oh baby NEW
by: Brandi E

After I posted my comment, I remembered the rest of the words my grandmother used to sing. It went like this,

"Bye oh bye, oh baby... bye oh bye, oh baby... go to sleep, grandma's girl... bye oh bye, oh baby..."

Of course the words would be changed for whoever was singing and who they were singing to, so "mommy's boy" or "auntie's girl" etc.

I have no idea who sang it, but it is my favorite lullaby and I'll sing it to my children someday.

My mother used to sing to me "bye oh bye oh baby..." and her mother used to sing it to her. I have no idea where it came from, but when my niece was born, I learned it and would sing it to her. You just sing the words very slowly and drawn out. I love it.
