I’m from Arkansas and my grandmother who was born in 1937 and raised in rural Arkansas used to sing me this lullaby and I have sang it to my children to put them to sleep. We always sing it like this;
Bayou baby buntin’
Daddy’s gone a huntin’
To catch a little speckle skin
To wrap my baby ____ in.

British Roots by: Melanie
My parents were raised in Oklahoma but lived in Texas most of their (and our) lives. My daddy sang this to me as a child and later to my son while he rocked us. The song traces its roots to 1700's England. I suppose it was passed down through the generations of Daddy's family who almost all hail from England and Wales. I'm in my late 50's and I can still remember how safe, protected, and loved I felt when he rocked me in his big arms and sang this to me at bedtime. It makes me cry.
Daddy sang it like this, in a sweet, almost baby-talk-like way:
"Bye-o Baby Buntin', Daddy's gone-a huntin' to get a rabbit skin, to wrap my Baby Buntin' in".

My parents always sang it as:
Bye o baby bunting,
Daddy’s gone a hunting,
Gone to catch a rabbit skin, To put my baby ____ in
I still sing it to myself sometimes to be comforted and fall asleep.

It must be a southern lullaby by: RANDel Smith
It must be a southern lullaby
my mother was born in 1914 in Oklahoma and when I was growing up around Texas city Texas I guess about 1958 or 59 which would put me at two and three years old, she used to sing
bye-o baby bunting,
daddy’s gone a hunting,
for a little rabbit skin,
to wrap the baby bunting in.
she must have been saying "bayou",
As in a body of water here in the south. I did not have any idea what all that meant when I was a kid and used to ask her and she would explain that bunting was cloth to wrap the baby
in. bunting is not a garment it just means cloth As in flag bunting, patriotic coloured cloth draped around a room et cetera.

Baby buntings are basically baby sleeping bags. They keep your baby cozy when it's nippy outside.

I would like to know what is a baby bunting. The lyrics do not clarify this. Bunting is a wrap.

The version I remember by: Anonymous
I have been trying to find the words to the lullaby my mom (and I guess my older sisters) sang to us when we were young. I had some of the words and this post helped me fill in the rest. I think I remember it like this:
Bye oh, baby bunting Daddy's gone a hunting Gone to catch a rabbit's skin to wrap his baby bunting in.
Mom would sing this over and over again until we would fall asleep sometimes changing it up with Rock-a-bye baby in the tree top / When the wind blows the the cradle will rock / When the bough breaks the cradle will fall / and down will come baby cradle and all.
I want to pass these words on to my daughters so they can sing them to their children. We got our first grand-daughter in May
